Since winter I had been eyeing a strange small island in the middle of one of the creeks running through Baxter’s Hollow, and after a few months it occurred to me that it was covered in horsetails. Today the water was finally low enough for me to jump rocks across to inspect. Indeed, it is a magical little island absolutely covered in horsetails.
The pink stuff is a lichenicolous fungus – a fungus which grows exclusively on lichen.
I chased around many lizards at the Naples Botanical Garden last November. I know lizards are the norm for a lot of people, but for this animal-loving northerner… I will never not chase a lizard.
